On April 2 and 3, the original epic drama “Zhang Yintang in Xizang” was staged for two consecutive days at the Tibetan Opera Art Center of the Tibetan Opera Troupe of the Xizang Autonomous Region. Jointly created by the Tibetan Opera Troupe of the Xizang Autonomous Region and the Guangdong Cantonese Opera Theatre, the production was the fruit of over nearly two years of collaboration.

As a native of Guangdong, Zhang Yintang served as Resident Assistant Minister to Xizang during the late Qing Dynasty. The performance is based on the historical records of Zhang Yintang’s governance of Xizang. It recounts how Zhang volunteered to go to Xizang amid the crisis precipitated by the British military’s invasion of the region, safeguarding national sovereignty while promoting the development of the border areas.
